Dr. Rujuta Mehta: 2024 Russell G. Smith Travelling Fellow

Dr. Rujuta Mehta visited Hippy Lab this summer as the 2024 Russell G. Smith Travelling Fellow. Dr. Mehta is the head of the Department of Paediatric Orthopaedics at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children in Mumbai; her ongoing efforts to improve pediatric hip health reflect her commitment to integrating international best practices with local expertise to address complex health challenges. Her team at Wadia Children’s Hospital in Mumbai has a long history of meaningful collaborations in research and clinical care projects, including their long-time participation in the Global Health Data Registry (GHDR).

Dr. Mehta’s visit was aimed at developing a curriculum for training and creating knowledge translation tools which are expected to benefit children suffering from hip disorders globally. Her visit to BC Children’s Hospital helps to strengthen ties between our programs and provides invaluable bidirectional exchange of knowledge, galvanizing ongoing collaborative efforts from local to global!

The experience allowed Dr. Mehta to integrate her extensive knowledge and skills with the resources and expertise of international authorities in the field, including our own Dr. Emily Schaeffer and Dr. Kishore Mulpuri. This visit was also part of her participation as a POSNA-POGO scholar, where she also attended the EPOSNA 2024 conference in Maryland, USA and the Hip Hope Network Annual Meeting.

Dr. Mehta's visit to BC Children’s Hospital is supported by the Russell G. Smith Travelling Fellowship Grant, awarded in honour of the legacy of I’m A HIPpy founding Chair, Russell G. Smith, and his passionate support for improving global pediatric hip health. This grant is awarded annually to a member of the hip health community from an under-resourced global region by way of a travelling fellowship visit to the Hippy Lab at BC Children’s Hospital.
