Coop Students (Summer 2023)

The Hippy Lab offers work opportunities to undergraduate students, enabling the students to learn more about clinical research and working in a hospital setting.

We interviewed our current co-op students to learn about their experiences working with the lab.

Maneeta Janjua

Hi, my name is Maneeta!

I am an undergraduate student in the Integrated Sciences major at UBC studying Physiology, Immunology, and Public Health.

I primarily coordinate the UBC Global Orthopaedics (UBC GO) initiative. I also contribute to the Hippy Lab’s registry programs, as well as the establishment of a care pathway for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) in Canada.

I enjoy the collaboration opportunities with surgeons and researchers in my day-to-day activities with UBC GO and the Hippy Lab.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading, dancing (particularly Bhangra and Bollywood), and exploring vegan shops and restaurants in Vancouver.

Fun Fact: I love jigsaw puzzles! 

With the experiences, knowledge, and skills acquired from this position, I hope to propel closer to achieving my goal of becoming a physician.

Sharon Ho

Hi, my name is Sharon!

I am an undergraduate student at UBC's Faculty of Science studying Cognitive Systems: Brain and Cognition.

My role focuses on research in Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). I also contribute to several projects under the common goal of establishing a standardized DDH care pathway in BC.

I enjoy being able to work  with so many passionate individuals on such impactful research projects.

In my free time, I love music, singing in an A Cappella group, dancing, and ordering too much food at new restaurants.

Fun fact: I completely embarrassed myself in front of Dr. Bonnie Henry once!

In future, I aspire to become a counsellor.

Christie Yang

Hi, my name is Christie!

I am an undergraduate student in Biochemistry at UBC in the Faculty of Science.

My main responsibilities involve recruiting patients for hip-related studies such as DDH, and monitoring their follow-up visits while maintaining patient data records. I focus on studies involving patients with cerebral palsy, and collaborate closely with physiotherapists in the Orthopaedic clinic.

I appreciate the versatility of my role, which allows me to engage with patients directly, perform tasks like data entry and the opportunity to gain insight into the research process.

During my free time, I enjoy baking and exploring new recipes.

Fun fact: I had aspirations of becoming an actress and even attended acting school!

I have a strong passion for medical science and I aspire to pursue a career in the healthcare field such as medicine.

Sheila Lam

Hi, my name is Sheila!

I am an incoming 1st year medical student at UBC. I previously majored in Microbiology & Immunology.

I am primarily involved with the Cerebral Palsy & Rest Syndrome studies, working in patient recruitment and collaboration with international researchers. I also contribute to development of the Rare Hip Conditions Registry and early works of care pathway development.

My favourite aspect of this role includes the meaningful connections and lessons learned from fellow students and allied healthcare professionals.

Aside from academics and work, I love hiking, trying out new food places, watching Netflix shows and spending time with family.  

Fun fact: I don’t know how to ride a bike!

I have been inspired by the amazing clinical team in the Orthopaedic clinic and will hopefully work with the paediatric population during my career.

Sammy Gee

Sammy Gee

Hi, my name is Sammy!

I am an undergraduate student at UBC majoring in Integrated Sciences at UBC.

My primary focus are the trauma studies, where I actively engage in patient enrollment and collaborates with international researchers. Additionally, I contribute to various hip registry programs within the lab, including GHDR, SLIP, and IPSG.

I enjoy the diverse nature of my role as it allows interaction with patients while also working on independent research tasks.

 Outside the Hippy Lab, I like to play basketball, workout, and spend time with family and friends.  

Fun fact: I aspired to be a Nascar racer as a child!

I would like to pursue a career in healthcare with the ultimate goal of positively impacting the lives of patients.
